May 15, 2008: G.I. Bill for Missionary School, CA Court Recognizes Gay Marriage, UC Berkeley Staff Sued for Pro-Evolution Site

May 16th, 2008 · No Comments

Christian news highlights for today include an article about veterans being encouraged to use the G.I. Bill for missionary studies, the California Supreme Court overturning state laws to recognize same-sex marriage, and the Pacific Justice Institute suing some UC Berkeley staff members for a federally funded website they believe is promoting certain Christian denominations over others. On to the links…

Veterans are being encouraged to use their G.I. Bill for missionary school. The Christian group called The Master’s Mission (TMM) invites veterans to enroll in an eleven-month, $17,600 program to get the

“training and resources necessary to become effective missionaries.”

The program is apparently approved for use by the Montgomery GI Bill and Veterans Educational Assistance Program, and veterans could be ideally suited for some of the newly planned missionary regions, like Afghanistan and Iraq.

Today, the California Supreme Court ruled 4-3 to overturn state laws and recognize same-sex marriage.

Chief Justice Ron George wrote in his opinion that the same same-sex “marriage” ban was “discriminatory” and that

“domestic partnerships are not a good enough substitute for marriage.”

The hope for pro-family groups now is passage of a constitutional amendment to ban gay “marriage” during the election in November.

Some staff members at the University of California-Berkeley are being sued over a pro-evolution website, which apparently derides religious groups that don’t agree with evolution.

The Pacific Justice Institute (PJI) is claiming the site is designed with federal money and endorses religious denominations over others.

“Whatever one’s views on the origin of life or the theory of evolution, it is completely inappropriate for the government to declare that some religious denominations are better than others,” explained PJI Chief Counsel Kevin Snider.
